Abstract
Based on the presentation “Maternity: the Impact of Calculative Thinking on Choice” (IIF Conference, 2025), this article explores maternity as an experience of future from an ontophenomenological perspective. It argues that the openness or closure of the future in maternity is not reducible to socio-technical conditions or perinatal psychopathology, but must be understood at the level of lived experience. Drawing on Heidegger, Bataille, and Scheler, the article identifies calculative thinking as the dominant horizon of contemporary experience: a mode of disclosure that reduces the child, the self, and life itself to utility and functionality. In the opening of a “beyond of utility”, where experience is reconfigured according to value, the inquiry introduces the themes of sovereignty and the sacred as conditions of a birth understood not simply in biological terms, but as a transformation of existence.
