The future of Brazilian professional football under the impact of the climate crisis by 2040

Abstract

This study explores two central questions: What are the critical uncertainties posed by the climate crisis to the future of Brazilian professional football? And how can these uncertainties inform adaptive strategies for key stakeholders in the sector? The underlying premise is that the intensification of climate-related disruptions by 2040 will require structural adaptations in Brazilian professional football, with uneven impacts across regions, teams, and fan communities.
Adopting an exploratory and anticipatory approach grounded in Foresight and Futures Studies, this research employs methods such as desk research, 7 Questions Method, STEEP Analysis and Impact-Uncertainty Grid. By taking in consideration the opinion of specialists from the teams staff, broadcasting media professionals and super fans, this paper identifies potential systemic impacts of climate disruptions on key aspects of the sport, including athlete health, match scheduling, fan attendance, infrastructure, and financial sustainability.
