Abstract
Why is it important to study the future of inner areas? This paper seeks to answer this question by examining key issues related to depopulation and territorial disparities. The concept of “inner areas” is widely debated, often used interchangeably with rural, peripheral, or marginal areas. However, a dichotomous spatial approach fails to capture their complexity. The narrative surrounding these areas frequently emphasizes nostalgia and “futurelessness”, but it is important to focus on local images of the future, giving back their “voice” and the power to shape their reality. It also highlights power dynamics in defining their future and argues that territorial inequalities should. By considering power relations and territorial inequalities, which should be framed as issues of spatial justice, this work underscores the need for a systemic, future-oriented approach to studying inner areas as part of broader spatial dynamics.
