Abstract
The philosophy of self-directed evolution owes its bad reputation to the concept of "eugenics," an ideology that was not exclusively associated with Nazism but enjoyed almost unanimous support in Western intellectual circles between the 19th and 20th centuries with racist and colonialist undertones. However, by deconstructing the harmful aspects of eugenics, it is possible to develop a new philosophy of self-directed evolution that emphasizes the primacy of individual freedom of choice.
