Abstract
Marginal mountain areas are emerging as some of the most interesting laboratories for social and territorial innovation, where demographic and economic challenges intertwine with unique opportunities for experimentation and renewal. This article explores the innovative application of strategic foresight ,methodologies to address socio-economic challenges in marginal mountain areas, using the Primiero region in the Italian Dolomites as a case study. By integrating Futures Literacy, the Three Horizons model, and Backcasting, the research proposes a theoretical-practical framework to transform peripheral territories into hubs of social innovation and sustainable development. The analysis focuses particularly on the role of the Piano Giovani di Zona as a catalyst for systemic change, highlighting how a participatory approach can generate significant results in territorial revitalization. The original contribution of this research lies in the development of an integrated strategic planning model that combines foresight methodologies with community engagement practices, offering insights for policymakers and territorial development scholars.
