Abstract
The erosion of horizons of meaning founded on the centrality of the future entails the compression of existence into a persistent and reiterated "here and now." The future, once a resource, turns into a threat, and the anguish of finitude is resolved in the daily mimicry of passage. Routinized death, while comforting man from the psychological shock caused by the disappearance of the future, subjects him, however, to the eternal power of the present.
