Abstract
In recent years, the tourism sector has been facing profound transformations that challenge traditional planning and governance. This article explores how participatory foresight can support long-term reflection in local contexts. It presents the results of “I Futuri del Turismo Trentino”, a foresight project involving 45 professionals from the local tourism ecosystem in the co-creation of four narrative scenarios set in 2040. The scenarios envision Trentino as a territory where urban and mountain areas are deeply interconnected, shaping a unified tourism experience. Despite their differences, the narratives highlight common patterns: the role of digital technologies, the importance of time, the value of memory and the shared responsibility among visitors, communities and institutions. Foresight emerges not only as an exploratory tool, but also as an interpretive device to support anticipatory governance in complex tourism systems based on short, local value chains.
