Abstract
This article examines a largely invisible systemic risk of widespread reliance on generative AI for organizational writing: the gradual erosion of organizational memory, situated decision-making, and innovative capacity. Delegating writing to AI delivers immediate efficiency gains but disrupts the cognitive processes through which organizations generate meaning, judgment, and shared knowledge. Writing is not merely a communication output; it is thinking in action, activating tacit memory, contextual awareness, and decision responsibility. When text is produced through prompts rather than human elaboration, many decisions fail to sediment and do not become part of the collective cognitive fabric. The article identifies a double cognitive loss – at the prompt formulation stage and during the assimilation of AI-generated output – which, when repeated at scale, becomes systemic, following a dynamic akin to the tragedy of the commons.
Drawing on philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and recent empirical studies, the paper proposes concrete criteria for governing generative AI in ways that preserve organizational intelligence over time.
