Abstract
In this editorial, Roberto Paura reflects on the enduring debate over the idea of progress, recalling the sharp critique of Christopher Lasch and the optimistic defense of innovation by David Deutsch. While technological advances inspire hope, concerns about climate change, resource depletion, and genetic engineering reveal the risks of an uncritical faith in innovation. Paura questions the “technological solutionism” promoted by figures such as Peter Diamandis and criticized by Evgeny Morozov, warning against the illusion that technology can replace politics. The editorial argues instead for reconnecting progress with democratic decision-making, urging society to reclaim its role in shaping the direction and limits of scientific and technological development.
