Abstract
The aspiration for immortality characterizes many human narratives. This quest for meaning clashes with the reality of temporality and death. Major human narratives like science, religion, and utopias attempt to overcome this condition. Science, in particular, initially develops in a religious context, promising a kind of immortality through knowledge. These religious and utopian impulses continue to influence modern science, which seeks to offer promises of progress and immortality but faces challenges in keeping these promises today. In a post-humanistic world, people cling to technology, nature, and religion to seek meanings beyond human finitude.
